Cross-venue basis is sized at zero until both legs are live and cleared, and natural gas carries the process while compute liquidity forms.
A hedger using this contract fixes the market-clearing rental rate for a standardized GPU-hour. That rate is driven, in order of weight, by implied depreciation on the installed GPU base, fleet utilization and operator margin, new capacity coming online, data center capital cost, and power price.
The contract is a levered instrument on implied GPU depreciation and fleet utilization, both observable, contested and slow to reprice. Quadrupling power to $200 per MWh moves the GPU-hour cost stack by under ten percent, which is why power earns its place as a regime indicator rather than a hedge relationship: it signals whether capacity will be built and energized, a supply-formation signal with a long lead.
| Participant | What They Control | Why They Enter | Entry | What They Bring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neoclouds and GPU lessors | The rentable fleet and spot rate | Unhedged rental revenue against dated debt | First | The natural short, the cleanest commercial hedge |
| GPU-backed lenders | Advance rates and covenants | Residual value and post-contract revenue risk | Early, with borrowers | The forcing function: covenant-driven flow |
| Developers and IPPs | Megawatts and energization timing | The toll-versus-merchant choice gets a price | Early, small size | Physical-layer data and offtake structuring demand |
| Accelerator vendors | Allocation and residual guaranties | Exposure held through backstops and guaranties | Via financing | Deep exposure, one step removed |
| Banks and merchant dealers | Balance sheet to warehouse risk | Structuring fees on hedges laid off in listed markets | With the lenders | The first listed volume |
| Hyperscalers and AI labs | In-house versus rented capacity | Budget certainty on their largest cost line | Later, via treasury | Size that releases the capacity constraint |
| Multi-strategy funds | Nothing physical | Return, once open interest absorbs an allocation | Last, at scale | Liquidity, and the close of the launch window |
In crude, physical participants and their lenders reached the paper market years before financial players, and the same order is forming here. One seat has no occupant: the independent intermediary between producers and consumers with no fleet of its own. That seat is this business.
Hedging demand is a bid at the front and an offer from the belly through the deferred. The deferred should trade at a persistent discount to the value the physical economics support: a hedging-pressure premium earned by the party that warehouses it.
$500bn+ financing platforms and a $105bn residual guaranty put compute on infrastructure balance sheets. The first OTC compute forward swap has traded, prediction markets publish an implied H100 forward curve, and three listed venues are in flight.
Options on the compute future and basis swaps against ERCOT and PJM power. Banks write five-year compute collars and lay them off into the listed strip. Position limits and large-trader reporting arrive with real open interest, and non-incumbent chip contracts list.
Offtake contracts quote as an index calendar strip plus a differential, the way LNG quotes off Henry Hub. Energy-normalized contracts make the power-to-compute spread listable, and residual value risk moves from bilateral guaranties onto cleared markets.
Listed volume in this complex follows over-the-counter dealer activity ahead of end-user hedging. Announced OTC swaps, structured collars and residual value transfers are the leading indicator of when the order book can carry outside capital. Exchange press releases are a lagging one.
